About Pilates

Joseph Pilates was born in Germany in the late 1800’s. As a child he suffered from a number of serious illnesses. Through living with these illnesses he was determined to rebuild his body strength and using elements of a number of exercise and sporting methods he developed his technique which he called ‘Contrology’. He believed that this method would develop the body uniformly, correcting wrong postures, restore physical vitality, invigorate the mind and elevate the spirit, this was proved through the people he worked with. Starting with rehabilitating soldiers during his internment in World War One and then after emigrating to America in the twenties, he worked with boxers and injured ballet dancers to restore them to health.

He firmly believed that his method, that only became known as Pilates after his death, would eventually become popular worldwide and so his prediction was true.

Body Control Pilates has broken down his original exercises so that Pilates is accessible to the average person, irrespective of age and fitness levels. This approach takes you safely and progressively towards Joseph Pilates’ original work.

Many of his original exercises, if performed correctly, would be very challenging for the average person; so this way teaches you new movement skills and gradually develops your body awareness, strength and flexiblity. It is this method of teaching that defines good pilates and Body Control Pilates is widely seen as a benchmark for safe and effective teaching of the highest quality.
